Ipanema and Leblon beach

Copacabana is by far the most famous beach in Rio. However, the most popular beaches of the "Cariocas" (residents of Rio) are probably Ipanema and Leblon, which are separated only by a narrow canal called the Garden of Allah. At the end of Leblon in the background is the Moro dos Irmaos (Brothers' Hill) which overlooks this beautiful area. The beach in Rio is subdivided into Postos (numbered lifeguard towers), each one characterized and frequented by its habitués. Ipanema goes from 7 to 10 and Leblon from 11 to 12. Ipanema starts at Arpoador beach, the ideal spot to enjoy the sunset and watch the surfers. Posto 8 is recognized as the gay beach of Ipanema, easily identified by the rainbow flags. Posto 9 is a favorite with the younger crowd, the beautiful, fashionable people of Rio and regarded by many to be one of the sexiest beaches in the world. From Posto 10 onwards, there are mostly families. Ipanema beach has been immortalized in the song "The Girl from Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema"), written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. Watch people practicing sports all over the beaches: mostly football, volleyball, and foot-volley, a combination of volleyball and football.
